Vollständiger Abstract
Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Overweight and obesity are public health problems, and our understanding of them has evolved toward a biopsychosocial approach that recognizes the interaction of biological, psychological, family, and sociocultural factors. Weight-related discrimination and stigma increase the risk of anxiety, depression, psychological stress, low self-esteem, and emotional eating, affecting quality of life and adherence to treatment. Likewise, the family environment and the media play a significant role in shaping body ideals and influencing eating behaviors and self-care practices. This article analyzes current perceptions of overweight and obesity and their relationship to mental health, highlighting that perceptions of body weight do not always align with clinical status, as they are influenced by body image, self-esteem, personal beliefs, and social stigma. It emphasizes the importance of understanding obesity as a complex condition that requires interventions focused on both physical health and emotional well-being.
