Pediatric Nurses’ Role in Nutritional Rehabilitation and Symptom Management for Children with Helicobacter Pylori

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the pediatric population triggers gastrointestinal distress, mucosal inflammation, and micronutrient malabsorption, necessitating specialized clinical and educational nursing care. Aim: This empirical study evaluated the effectiveness of pediatric nurses’ nutritional rehabilitation and symptom management for children diagnosed with helicobacter . pylori. Methods: A quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test design was utilized. The study was conducted in the Pediatric Gastroenterology Outpatient Clinic and Inpatient Wards at Sohag university hospitals. A purposive sample of 100 pediatric patients with confirmed H. pylori infections and their primary caregivers (mothers) was selected based on specific clinical inclusion criteria. Data were gathered through a Pediatric Clinical & Nutritional Assessment Sheet, the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), a structured Caregivers' Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire, and a Medication & Dietary Adherence Questionnaire. Results: Post-intervention outcomes demonstrated statistically significant improvements in the experimental group compared to baseline data. Children experienced a marked reduction in gastrointestinal symptom severity, enhanced growth percentiles, and corrected serum iron and hemoglobin levels. Additionally, caregivers displayed a substantial transition from poor/fair knowledge levels to good knowledge regarding H. pylori transmission and management, which directly correlated with higher medication compliance and increased bacterial eradication rates. Conclusion: The practical application of structured pediatric nursing protocols is highly effective in managing clinical manifestations, accelerating nutritional recovery, and maximizing treatment adherence. This study supports the standardization of evidence-based nursing intervention frameworks across pediatric gastroenterology units.
