Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review

There are numerous studies in the literature examining the effects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) on patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The aim of this systematic review is to synthesize studies on DBT and Borderline Personality Disorder to examine the effects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy on patients with BPD and to observe how differences in the treatment process and content influence patient outcomes. This study was conducted using a systematic review methodology and did not involve primary data collection. The study included research published in English between 2010 and 2026. Upon reviewing the literature and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24 studies were deemed eligible. The included studies comprise 12 randomized controlled trials, 1 prospective observational study, 1 naturalistic observational study, 1 controlled clinical observational study, 1 observational efficacy study, 1 non-randomized comparative study, 2 efficacy studies, 1 observational cohort study, 3 quasi-experimental studies, and 1 pilot randomized study. An analysis of the findings from the selected studies revealed that DBT is effective in several areas for patients with BPD. Overall, improvements were observed in patients’ emotional regulation and mood, a decrease in non-suicidal self-harm attempts, a reduction in borderline personality disorder criteria, and an increase in overall quality of life.
