Vollständiger Abstract
Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Background: Globally, adolescents experience peer pressure, drug and substance abuse and unemployment. In addition, other adolescents are living with chronic conditions such as type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), which seems to have a negative impact on the quality of life they experience daily. Objectives: The study aimed to explore and describe the lived experiences of adolescents with T1DM. Method: This study employed a descriptive phenomenological approach. Unstructured individual interviews were conducted with 12 adolescents. The data were analysed using Giorgi’s data analysis steps. Results: Revealed shared struggles among adolescents living with T1DM. Their narratives illuminated the psychological, physical and social challenges they faced. Conclusion: This study unveiled the experiences of adolescents living with T1DM. The findings can help develop a more holistic clinical approach to managing adolescents with this condition, thereby enhancing their quality of life. Contribution: The study offered significant insights into the lives of adolescents living with T1DM and promotes awareness of their daily struggles, which gives healthcare organisations insight into what may be implemented to facilitate a supportive clinical environment that enhances the quality of life of adolescents living with type one diabetes mellitus.
