The Impact of Training on Attitude and Knowledge of Venous Thromboembolism Risk Assessment amongst Nurse Interns at River State University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria

Abstract Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a life-threatening, preventable complication that can occur in hospitalised patients. Thus, healthcare providers must be equipped with the skills to identify, prevent and treat it. This study aimed to assess new nurses’ knowledge of VTE and their perceived contribution to the care of patients. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental method was used to examine the knowledge and impact of training on the knowledge and attitude of intern nurses regarding VTE risk assessment. Results: A total of 44 intern nurses with a mean duration of practice of 1.43 years participated in the survey. Only 2 participants (4.56%) had previous training on VTE prevention, and 21 (47.7%) had encountered patients with VTE during their practice. Before the training, 56.2% of the respondents had poor knowledge of VTE, and a few participants recognised the nurse’s role in risk assessing hospitalised patients for VTE. The more commonly perceived roles were in ambulating, monitoring and administering prescribed anticoagulants. After the training, there was no participant with a poor level of knowledge. Conclusion: This study highlights the positive impact of training on intern nurses’ knowledge of VTE and their attitude towards VTE risk assessment. The findings emphasise the need for ongoing education and training programmes to enhance nurses’ understanding of VTE prevention and their role in risk assessment and management.
