Severe infections and prolonged medical hospitalization can produce persistent functional consequences that extend beyond resolution of the acute illness, including physical deconditioning, reduced endurance, cognitive difficulties, psychological distress, and diminished independence in everyday activities. These consequences can complicate discharge, restrict community participation, and increase rehabilitation needs. This study examines occupational therapy interventions for functional recovery following severe infection and prolonged medical hospitalization outcomes, with emphasis on restoring meaningful occupational performance across post-acute recovery. It considers interventions involving activities of daily living retraining, graded functional activity, energy conservation, fatigue management, cognitive rehabilitation, adaptive equipment, environmental modification, upper-extremity function, and patient and caregiver education. Particular attention is directed toward individualized assessment and intervention planning based on functional limitations, occupational priorities, hospitalization-related impairments, and discharge environments. Relevant outcomes include independence in self-care, mobility-related participation, activity tolerance, cognitive functioning, return to productive and social roles, and health-related quality of life. By connecting occupational therapy strategies with measurable functional outcomes, the study supports multidisciplinary rehabilitation approaches that extend recovery beyond medical stabilization toward sustained independence, participation, and meaningful reintegration into everyday life.
