Vollständiger Abstract

Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?

This study examined the influence of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on peer influence and academic achievement among undergraduates in North-Central Nigeria. The study was motivated by the increasing rate of negative peer influence and declining academic achievement among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities. Negative peer pressure has been associated with behaviors such as truancy, examination malpractice, substance abuse, cultism, poor study habits, and other maladaptive behaviors that adversely affect students’ academic performance and psychological adjustment. The study discussed the concept of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a psychotherapeutic approach aimed at modifying irrational thoughts, maladaptive beliefs, and dysfunctional behaviors. The concepts of peer influence and academic achievement were also examined in relation to undergraduate students’ behavioral adjustment and educational outcomes. The study was anchored on Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Theory, which explains how cognitive processes influence behavior, emotions, and decision-making. The theory provided the basis for understanding how CBT could help students challenge irrational beliefs associated with peer acceptance and develop healthier cognitive and behavioral patterns. The study established that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy could serve as an effective counselling intervention for helping undergraduate students resist destructive peer pressure, improve emotional regulation, develop positive study habits, and enhance academic commitment. The study further highlighted the relevance of CBT techniques such as cognitive restructuring, self-monitoring, behavioral rehearsal, reinforcement, and problem-solving skills in promoting positive behavioral adjustment and academic success among students. The study concluded that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an important psychological and counselling approach for addressing peer-related behavioral challenges and improving academic achievement among undergraduates in North-Central Nigeria. The study recommended the integration of CBT-based intervention programs into university counselling services to enhance students’ behavioral adjustment and educational development.
