The Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach and Treatment of Recurrent Supraventricular Tachycardia in the Geriatric Population – A Case Report

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a cardiac rhythm disorder characterized by sudden episodes of rapid heart rate and may cause palpitations, chest discomfort, and dyspnea. This case report describes a 75-year-old patient with recurrent SVT, baseline respiratory difficulties, previous right upper lobectomy, and current left-lung adenocarcinoma. During an episode of palpitations and worsening dyspnea, non-pharmacological maneuvers were unsuccessful, while intravenous administration of 6 mg adenosine resulted in rapid conversion to sinus rhythm. The patient had contacted emergency medical services 11 times over the preceding nine days. Although catheter ablation had initially been proposed, his complex medical history required an alternative therapeutic approach. Following cardiological evaluation, flecainide was added to his existing beta-blocker therapy. Subsequently, the patient's condition stabilized, and he no longer required emergency medical assistance. This case highlights the importance of an individualized and multidisciplinary approach to recurrent SVT in geriatric patients with significant comorbidities, particularly when invasive treatment may not be suitable.
