Effect of Structured Nurse-Led Pre-Procedural Education on State Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography is an invasive procedure commonly associated with elevated anxiety levels due to uncertainty, fear of complications, and limited knowledge about the procedure. Pre-procedural anxiety may negatively affect patient cooperation, comfort, and overall procedural experience. This study aimed to examine the effect of structured nurse-led pre-procedural education on state anxiety levels in patients undergoing Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 132 adult patients scheduled for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography at a tertiary care hospital in Türkiye. Participants were allocated to an experimental group (n = 66) and a control group (n = 66). Patients in the experimental group received a standardized nurse-led education session approximately 30–60 minutes before the procedure, whereas the control group received routine care. State anxiety levels were assessed using the State Anxiety Inventory before the intervention and immediately prior to the procedure. Baseline anxiety scores were similar between the groups. Following the intervention, anxiety levels significantly decreased in the experimental group, while no significant change was observed in the control group. Pre-procedural anxiety scores were significantly lower among patients who received structured education compared with those receiving routine care. These findings suggest that structured nurse-led education is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for reducing anxiety before Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. Integrating standardized educational programs into routine nursing practice may enhance psychological preparedness, improve patient cooperation, and contribute to a more positive procedural experience. The results support the important role of nurses in delivering evidence-based educational interventions before invasive gastrointestinal procedures.
