Vollständiger Abstract

Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?

Absent fathers in South Africa are physically, emotionally, and relationally unavailable to their children, disengaging from paternal responsibilities, moral guidance, and affective support. Empirical and theological scholarship associates absent fathers with adverse developmental outcomes, including emotional insecurity, behavioural challenges, impaired moral reasoning, and increased vulnerability to delinquency. This article explores the role and impact of absent father figures in the rehabilitation of incarcerated youth within a correctional environment, drawing on empirical findings from Hawequa Correctional Centre. Employing a practical theological framework, the study integrates theological reflection with qualitative data to examine the causes and consequences of absent fathers and to propose faith based and mentorship oriented interventions. By engaging Osmer’s fourfold task of practical theology alongside intercultural pastoral approaches and relational ethics, the article contributes toward holistic, relationally grounded rehabilitation strategies within correctional contexts.
