Vollständiger Abstract
Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Premature unions have constituted one of the major social challenges in Cabo Delgado Province, compromising the educational, social, and economic development of children and adolescents, particularly girls. In this context, community radio has played a significant role in disseminating information aimed at raising community awareness of the negative impacts of this practice. This study analysed the role of community radios in disseminating information for the prevention of premature unions in Mecúfi District, Cabo Delgado Province. Specifically, it identified the radio content and programme formats used, assessed the perceptions of different social actors regarding the effectiveness of the messages disseminated, analysed the challenges faced by community radios, and proposed strategies to strengthen community communication. The study adopted a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, using case study as its methodological strategy. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, non-participant observation, and document analysis involving professionals from Mecúfi Community Radio, technicians from the Social Communication Institute, representatives of the District Government, and community leaders. The data were analysed using content analysis technique. The findings revealed that community radio played a significant role in disseminating educational messages on children's rights, girls' school retention, the risks of premature unions, and reporting and protection mechanisms. The study further found that the use of local languages and community participation enhanced the understanding and acceptance of the messages. However, challenges persisted, including inadequate financial resources, technical limitations, limited professional training, and socio-cultural beliefs. It was concluded that community radios constituted strategic communication tools for development, contributing to the prevention of premature unions and strengthening community participation. The study recommended strengthening staff capacity, improving technical and financial resources, and reinforcing institutional partnerships.
