INTRODUCTION: Humanization of care in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) represents an important strategy for promoting comprehensive, ethical, and patient-centered care focused on the biopsychosocial needs of critically ill patients. The intensive care environment is characterized by high clinical complexity, extensive use of technology, and frequent invasive procedures, factors that may contribute to the mechanization of care and the weakening of interpersonal relationships among healthcare professionals, patients, and family members. In this context, nursing plays a central role in the implementation of humanized practices through actions related to patient reception, therapeutic communication, qualified listening, and emotional support. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the impacts of the humanization of nursing care in Intensive Care Units on the quality of care provided to critically ill patients. METHODOLOGY: This is a narrative literature review with a qualitative approach, conducted through a survey of scientific publications in the SciELO, LILACS, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases, using descriptors related to humanization and intensive care. RESULTS: The findings demonstrated that humanized practices contribute to reducing emotional distress, strengthening the therapeutic relationship, improving the quality of care, and increasing patient and family satisfaction. Important challenges were also identified, including professional workload, structural limitations, and the predominance of a technicist model of care. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: It is concluded that humanization is an indispensable component of intensive care, requiring investments in professional training, the recognition and appreciation of nursing professionals, and the strengthening of institutional humanization policies.
