Hate speech has emerged as a significant issue in contemporary society, with social media amplifying its spread and impact. In Sierra Leone, particularly in Kenema City, hate speech among youths has become a pressing concern, often exacerbating political and ethnic tensions. This study examines the forms, causes, and conflict potential of hate speech among youths in Kenema City, focusing on the role of social media in its proliferation. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating surveys and interviews with youths, community leaders, and civil society organizations to understand the dynamics of hate speech and its implications for social stability. Findings suggest that political and ethnic affiliations significantly influence the dissemination of hate speech, with social media platforms acting as key catalysts. Additionally, economic hardships and unemployment contribute to youth vulnerability, making them susceptible to manipulative rhetoric. The study highlights the urgent need for media literacy programs, policy interventions, and community engagement initiatives to mitigate the spread of hate speech and foster a culture of tolerance. The insights from this research will contribute to policy discussions, academic discourse, and practical strategies for promoting social cohesion in Kenema City and beyond.
