Vollständiger Abstract
Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
The “No Bed Syndrome” is a visible manifestation of persistent weaknesses in Ghana’s healthcare system. It refers to situations in which patients requiring urgent care are denied admission because beds, essential equipment, specialist personnel, or operational capacity are unavailable. This opinion article examines the determinants and effects of the syndrome and identifies strategic interventions for improving emergency care. The discussion indicates that the problem extends beyond the physical number of beds and reflects interconnected deficiencies in hospital infrastructure, specialist staffing, referral coordination, medical resources, financing, governance, and health-system management. These deficiencies can delay treatment, increase avoidable morbidity and mortality, intensify psychological distress, erode public trust, place healthcare workers under ethical pressure, and impose social and economic costs on patients and families. The article argues that isolated infrastructure expansion is unlikely to resolve the problem unless it is accompanied by strengthened emergency and critical-care capacity, equitable workforce distribution, reliable referral pathways, functional equipment, sustainable financing, and effective accountability mechanisms. Digital bed-tracking, structured triage, improved communication between facilities, and stronger primary-level emergency care may also support more efficient patient flow. Addressing the “No Bed Syndrome” therefore requires a coordinated, patient-centred, and system-wide response that improves timely and equitable access to emergency services while strengthening confidence in Ghana’s healthcare system.
