Quantifying the state of the art: A random appraisal-weighted method for clinical evaluation under EU MDR

George Miller

Background The European Union Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR) requires manufacturers to establish quantitative, state of the art parameters for clinical evaluation. Because most available evidence is heterogeneous and uncontrolled, conventional meta-analytic methods provide limited support for deriving device level benchmarks. Methods A methodological framework was developed using synthetic datasets reflecting typical real-world evidence. Study means, variances and standard errors were combined using fixed effec …

Readability of U.S. food handler training materials: a natural language processing analysis of worker study guides and the federal Food Code

Morris Brako, Anirudh R. Naig

Introduction In many U.S. jurisdictions a food handler card requires studying a training document and passing a written examination; one state legally requires that the document be furnished to every applicant. Whether these documents can be read by the workers required to use them is unknown. The common assumption that certification is required in all fifty states is also inaccurate: among the jurisdictions whose rules we verified, some mandate training but delegate its content to private vendors, so no worker-fac …

Simona Wójcik, Anna Rulkiewicz, Justyna Domienik-Karłowicz

Background Patient-facing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly used for health information seeking, yet their role in patient–physician communication remains insufficiently characterized. Using the Network Episode Model as the primary framework, this study examined self-reported pre-consultation AI use, whether respondents reported disclosing that use to a physician, and self-reported AI-associated health-behavior change in a convenience sample of Polish adults recruited vi …

La ciudadanía laboral y la ciudadanía ambiental como camino hacia la transición justa. Algunas claves desde la participación sindical en temáticas de salud y ambiente en Argentina

Jorge Rubén Afarian

In this article, I will provide elements that will contribute to expanding the concept of “labour citizenship” by complementing it with that of “environmental citizenship.” This process is defined through union representation in health and environmental issues, both for and by workers, while also being of interest to and impacting the entire community. In other words, expanding the concept of labor citizenship implies a new level of social and political intervention by workers, specifically through their union asso …

Sexual dimorphism of midbrain catecholaminergic metabolism revealed by neuromelanin-sensitive MRI

Robert Raeder, Helmet T. Karim, Michele Bertocci, Yui Asaoka, Chan Moon, Manan Arora, Luke T. Roberts, Genna Bebko, Haris A. Aslam, Simona Graur, Megan Atkinson, Osasumwen Benjamin, Yiming Wang, Dominique DiDomenico, Richelle Stiffler, Deepak K. Sarpal, Zachary Freyberg, Mary L. Phillips

Abstract Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (NM-MRI) is used as a proxy biomarker of midbrain catecholaminergic metabolism and synthesis capacity, particularly within dopaminergic nuclei. However, despite strong translational evidence for sexual dimorphism in dopaminergic systems, inconsistent sex differences in NM-MRI signal limit its interpretability as a non-invasive measure of catecholaminergic synthesis capacity. A source of variability may be the reliance on contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) normal …

Coronavirus Disease 2019 is an Occupational Disease for Teachers: How to Support the Teacher Workforce

Alison K. Cohen, Lora Bartlett

Analyzing a growing body of epidemiological research that considers coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as an occupational disease situates teaching (eg, pre-kindergarten, elementary, secondary) among the more vulnerable occupations. Teachers have experienced a higher risk of COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, death, and Long COVID than people from many other occupations. More research attending to occupational patterns and risk mitigation is needed. Taking an occupational epidemiology approach for teachers can i …

Volition or coercion?—the role of socio-psychological factors in the stratification pathways of Chinese university students

Keyu Zhai, Qingbin Xu, Meihan Tao, Weiyu Zeng, Yixin Zhao

The existing literature on educational and social attainment has largely overlooked the role and interaction of social-psychological factors at the individual level. To address this gap, this study employs in-depth qualitative interviews ( N = 45) to explore how such factors shape the academic and career trajectories of Chinese university students. Anchored in a social-psychological perspective, the research identifies six core thematic drivers: parental educational conceptions, individual educational and occupatio …

The debiasing paradox: cognitive biases in judicial adjudication of valuation adjustment mechanisms across Chinese and American courts

Zihui Gao

Background Judicial adjudication of share repurchase clauses in Chinese valuation adjustment mechanisms (VAMs) exhibits marked typological divergence. The Ninth Meeting Minutes, issued in November 2019, sought to unify adjudicatory standards; however, disagreement has persisted. Existing scholarship accounts for this divergence through doctrinal analysis, leaving systematic cognitive distortions in judicial reasoning unexplored. Objective This study advances a “debiasing paradox” thesis—that a judicial policy instr …
