Recognizing muscle health in healthy aging and non-communicable disease policy: a public health perspective

Alvaro Puelles-Diaz

Population aging and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) place sustained pressure on health systems. In this perspective, I argue that muscle health—muscle mass, strength, and physical function—should be recognized as an explicit and prognostically distinct target within policies for healthy aging and NCD prevention. Two arguments distinguish this from generic physical activity promotion: muscle strength predicts mortality, regardless of activity level, and the most significant gains are produced …

Delayed diagnosis as a barrier to Zero Leprosy: Lived experiences from Pakistan

Anil Fastenau, Rhea Brüggemann, Abdul Salam, Charlotte Nehring, Maresa Neuerer, Hamideh Ebrahimi, Alexandra Asboeck, Matthew Willis, Sophie C. W. Unterkircher, Fabian Schlumberger, Heleen Neeltje Willemijn Duighuisen

Despite progress in leprosy control, delayed diagnosis remains a barrier to achieving Zero Leprosy, particularly in low-endemic settings. Diagnostic delay not only sustains hidden transmission but also leads to preventable disability and lifelong consequences for affected individuals. Pakistan, although classified as low endemic, continues to report a high proportion of new leprosy cases presenting with grade 2 disability (G2D), indicating delays in case detection. This study explored the reasons for delayed lepros …

Aglaia Zafeiroudi, Dimitrios Goulimaris, Ioannis Trigonis, Ioannis Tsartsapakis, Vasileios Papacharisis, Theodora Tseligka, Charilaos Kouthouris

Abstract Background Dance, as a creative and embodied form of physical activity, has been associated with psychological well-being. However, limited research has examined how recreational dance participation is related to mindfulness, self-compassion, and life satisfaction in non-clinical populations. This study aimed to address this gap by comparing psychological outcomes between recreational dancers and non-dancers and by examining dance-related characteristics among dancers. Methods A cross-sectional design was …

Vaginismus and Dyspareunia: A Comparative Review of Female Sexual Pain Disorders

Melike Çarıkçı, Ayhan Çakıcı

Vaginismus and dyspareunia are among the most prevalent female sexual pain disorders and have a substantial impact on sexual functioning, psychological well-being, and intimate relationships. Although these disorders were historically classified as separate diagnostic entities, they were unified under the diagnosis of Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder (GPPPD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Nevertheless, this diagnostic integration has generated ongoing deb …

Moral disengagement and fear of retaliation: why adolescents choose to be passive bystanders to school bullying

ChangJun Goh, Tomas Jungert

Abstract This study examined the potential functional overlap between fear of retaliation and moral disengagement as justifications for peer bystander inaction in school bullying. Although often treated as distinct barriers to intervention, the study investigated whether fear of retaliation could function as a self-exonerating justification to reconcile inconsistencies between one’s moral standards and passive behavior, similar to moral disengagement, and whether the two constructs empirically overlap. 163 students …

Universal Mental Health Screening in California School Settings: Current Practices, Barriers, and Opportunities

Stephanie A. Moore, Samira Soleimanpour, Sara Geierstanger, Jessica Yu, Eric M. Davidson, Kali Patterson

Abstract When implemented as part of a multi-tiered system of support, universal mental health screening (UMHS) can facilitate early identification and data-based decision-making in support of students’ social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. Despite increasing interest in school-based UMHS, its widespread uptake has historically been stagnant. Recent national estimates indicate that rates of UMHS implementation are increasing; however, the information available about current practices, as well as t …

Clinical Advocacy: How Physicians Fight Back against Bureaucratic and Financial Pressures

Alexandra E Brewer, Stefan Timmermans

The commercialization and corporatization of U.S. health care have intensified bureaucratic and economic constraints on clinical decision-making. Drawing on data from a 21-month ethnography of hospital-based clinicians, we introduce clinical advocacy as the often invisible work clinicians undertake to secure care that they judge medically appropriate when third parties external to the patient–provider relationship restrict medical practice. We identify four recurrent strategies of clinical advocacy: directly appeal …

Reciprocity in global health: How successes from the global south can inform global health interventions in Canada and the U.S

Tsitsi B. Masvawure, Mary Ndu, Charity Oga-Omenka

Global health has traditionally functioned as a project of high-income countries (HICs) addressing health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This “outward facing” orientation has created conceptual and operational boundaries that obscure the persistence of health inequities within HICs and perpetuates the false assumption that resource-rich nations have resolved fundamental health equity challenges in their own countries. In this essay we argue that HICs have global health problems of their own …

Abstract During the second Trump administration, the United States has signed bilateral health agreements with at least 27 states across Africa and Latin America, reshaping how signatory countries finance, regulate, and monitor their health systems. Grounded in the America First Global Health Strategy, these agreements are being signed as US withdrawal from WHO restructures global health. This column explores how this turn to bilateralism risks weakening multilateral legal obligations on capacity development, acces …
